Today I share with you an absolutely incredible recipe! But before we get to the recipe itself, let’s get to know it better and understand what the hell this sloppy joes is all about.
There are burgers, and then there are sloppy joes, which are like the burgers ugly cousins. It says that whoever sees faces doesn’t see hearts, and this is definitely one of those cases.
Imagine minced meat, with onions, green peppers and tomato sauce, all tossed into a burger bun. It is literally this. But don’t be fooled by the less polished appearance of sloppy joes, because they’re as messy as they are delicious!
Some say that the secret of sloppy joes lies in the perfect balance between the sweet, the tomato sauce or ketchup, and the spicy, which makes them one of the most appreciated North American delicacies around the world.
About its origin there is not much agreement or certainty, it is known that the first recipes appeared in the United States around 1930, and that the 3 names that claim their origin are Ye Old Tavern in Iowa, Sloppy Joe’s Bar in Florida and Sloppy Joe’s Bar in Cuba.
Soon the sloppy joes became an integral part of North American cuisine, regularly being part of the menu of school and factory canteens, restaurants and of course, the tables of the homes of all North Americans.
Currently, sloppy joes continue to be a hype not only in the United States but all over the world. An easy, practical and full of flavor recipe, that those who try it are surrendered.
EASY | QUICK | NUTRITIVE | PROTEIN RICH | SLIGHTLY SPICY | FULL OF FLAVOR | TO LICK THE FINGERS
The sloppy joes recipe that I bring to you is super simple! All you’ll need is a large skillet and a wooden spoon, oh, and maybe a knife to cut the vegetables.
The main ingredient of this recipe is the protein I chose. There are lots of vegan versions of sloppy joes that use lentils, textured soy, mushrooms, jackfruit, I opted for the Plant Protein Minced from Dragon SuperFoods. A product made from pea and fava beans and with a neutral flavor, which makes it super versatile and practical to use on a daily basis. This protein comes in slightly larger pieces than the textured one, which allows for more texture to the dishes. In my opinion it is an excellent alternative to animal protein, a healthier alternative, rich in protein and that combines with the most different dishes, making them more nutritionally balanced. In this recipe fits perfectly and I couldn’t have chosen better.
Vegetables are added to the protein, more specifically onions, garlic, green bell peppers and eringi mushrooms. The choice of this mushroom for this recipe was not by chance because if we shred them with the help of a fork, we get a texture quite similar to shredded chicken, which is visually very interesting in a recipe like this.
More spicy, less spicy is up to you to decide, I particularly love spicy so I always let my hand slip, as they say.
I could have used kecthup, as many sloppy joes recipes are made with ketchup, but I thought it would be too sweet, so I preferred to use very concentrated tomato pulp and add brown sugar according to my preference.
So let’s see the ingredients list?
1 chopped onion
1 large minced garlic clove
1/2 green bell pepper cut into small cubes
200g shredded eringi mushrooms
100gr of Dragon SuperFoods Plant Protein Minced
3 diced cucumber pickles
2 tsp of smoked paprika
1 tbsp of soy sauce
420gr of tomato pulp
4 tsp of brown sugar
Salt and black pepper to taste
Tabasco to taste (or any other spicy sauce)
TO SERVE (SUGGESTION)
10 burger buns
10 slices of cheese
Caramelized red onion
1 chopped onion
1 large minced garlic clove
1/2 green bell pepper cut into small cubes
200g shredded eringi mushrooms
100gr of Dragon SuperFoods Plant Protein Minced
3 diced cucumber pickles
2 tsp of smoked paprika
1 tbsp of soy sauce
420gr of tomato pulp
4 tsp of brown sugar
Salt and black pepper to taste
Tabasco to taste (or any other spicy sauce)
TO SERVE (SUGGESTION)
10 burger buns
10 slices of cheese
Caramelized red onion
1- Start by putting the protein to soak in boiling water. Let it soak while you prepare all the vegetables.
2 – Chop the onion and garlic, cut the pepper into very small cubes, chop the pickles and shred the mushrooms.
3- Add a generous thread of olive oil in the skillet and put it on the stove. When the olive oil is hot, add the onion, garlic, smoked paprika and soy sauce, and cook until the onion is translucent.
4- Add the green pepper and let it cook for another 4 minutes. Stir from time to time to prevent from burning.
5- Add the pickles and mushrooms and cook for about 5 minutes.
6- Drain the protein, discard the water, and crush the pieces of protein with your hands. It is not intended that the pieces are completely undone but that they become softer and more irregular.
7- Add to the skillet and mix well with the remaining ingredients.
8- Add the tomato pulp, salt, black pepper, sugar and spicy sauce. Stir well so that all the ingredients are well combined and let it cook for about 7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
9- Serve hot over a slice of burger bun with cheese.
